A short guide on preparing for the IStructE chartered membership exam

For most structural engineers working towards MIStructE, the Chartered Membership exam is the single biggest hurdle in the Professional Review process. It's a demanding, one-day test of design judgement rather than recall, and it catches out a lot of well-qualified engineers who go in under-prepared. This article covers what the exam actually involves, how tough it really is based on the latest published statistics, when to start preparing, and what your preparation should focus on.

Exam overview

The Chartered Membership exam is one of two components of the Professional Review, alongside the Professional Review Interview (PRI) — you can sit them in either order.

The exam itself runs for seven hours in a single day, split by a lunch break. You're given a choice of five design questions and must complete just one, split into two sections that carry equal weight:


  • Section 1 (50%) — a design appraisal. You sketch two genuinely distinct, viable, and sustainable structural schemes for the brief, covering framing, load transfer, stability, and foundations. You then compare the schemes, justify your preferred option (with sustainability as an explicit criterion), and write a short professional letter to the client suggesting brief changes that would reduce material use.

  • Section 2 (50%) — detailed substantiation. You produce design calculations to size the principal structural elements and foundations, approximate A1–A3 embodied carbon figures for those elements, general arrangement drawings, and a method statement describing how the structure would be safely built.

Both sections must be passed independently — a strong Section 2 won't compensate for a weak Section 1, or vice versa. In recent years the Institution has pushed harder on sustainability and carbon literacy as a genuine assessment criterion rather than a token add-on, so it's worth treating that as core scope rather than an afterthought.


Pass rates

The exam has a reputation for being difficult, and the published statistics back that up. In the July 2025 sitting, 336 candidates attempted the exam, with an overall pass rate of 31.85%. Performance varied significantly by question choice, ranging from around 14% on the toughest question to roughly 44% on the most accessible one — a reminder that question selection at the start of the exam matters.

The pass rate drops sharply with each resit. This isn't necessarily because later attempts are weaker candidates — it more likely reflects candidates repeating the same preparation approach without changing what wasn't working the first time. The takeaway is that your first attempt deserves your most serious preparation, and if you do need to resit, a genuine change in approach (not just "more of the same") matters more than familiarity with the format.


When to start preparing

There's no official minimum, but most candidates and prep courses converge on a similar range: expect to spend around six months or more of consistent effort alongside full-time work. Given the exam rewards fluency under time pressure rather than one-off revision, starting early and preparing steadily tends to beat a short, intense cram. The author started their exam preparation about 6- to 8 months before the exam, 

A sensible way to think about timing:


  • 12+ months out — start building general design breadth if you haven't already: seek exposure across different structural forms, materials, and building types at work, since the exam draws on the range of a "normal" chartered engineer's experience rather than niche specialism.

  • 6–9 months out — begin structured revision: past papers, examiner reports, and a prep course if you're taking one (this is strongly encouraged).

  • Final 1-2 months — shift to timed, full-length past paper attempts under exam conditions, including sketching and drawing at speed.

If you're also weighing up the PRI, many candidates prefer to sit the exam first, since the process of preparing scheme comparisons and calculations tends to sharpen the design thinking that comes up in interview too — though this is a personal preference rather than a requirement.


What to prepare

Given the format, your preparation should mirror the exam's two-section structure rather than treating it as a pure calculations exercise:


  • Past papers and examiner reports — the Institution publishes both, and the examiner reports are arguably the single most useful resource available. They spell out exactly where candidates lose marks each sitting: generic, non-bespoke scheme comparisons; cantilevers and long-span elements analysed without proper regard to back-span or capacity; drawings without sections, critical details, or dimensions; and method statements that list activities without addressing sequencing, temporary stability, or site constraints.

  • Two genuinely distinct schemes — practise this specifically. Examiners consistently flag candidates who submit a second scheme that's really just the first with the material swapped. Aim for schemes that differ in framing strategy or stability system, not just material.

  • Sustainability and carbon literacy — practise writing the brief-amendment letter and producing approximate A1–A3 carbon figures for principal elements; both are explicitly marked and commonly under-attempted or rushed.

  • Speed sketching and drawing standards — general arrangement plans, a full building section, and genuinely critical details (not generic reinforcement details), all producible clearly and quickly with a straight edge.

  • Buildability and method statements — a specific, sequenced narrative addressing how the structure is safely built, including temporary works and stability during construction, rather than a generic list of trades.

  • Timed practice — attempt full past papers under real time pressure well before the exam date. Time management across all five sub-sections is one of the most frequently cited reasons candidates run out of time on borderline scripts.

  • An exam prep course, used carefully — these are useful for structure and exposure to marking expectations, but examiners specifically warn against generic, "off-the-shelf" answers that read as template responses rather than bespoke solutions to the brief in front of you.





















Treat the exam as a test of judgement under a specific, unfamiliar brief — not a checklist of standard details to reproduce — and your preparation time will be far better spent.
